Medieval almanac kit

This kit is based on Wellcome’s almanac MS.8932, focusing on just one of its six areas of embroidery, using previously obsolete and undocumented techniques. This ‘bat book’ has eight folded leaves encased in a limp binding and secured with braid. Like the historic version, the sections will be made from three layers, with the silk embroidered fabric uppermost. However, the internal parchment stiffener is replaced by a card alternative and the underside of wool fabric is upgraded to velvet. The original binding is approximately 38mm in width, while this will measure around 50mm. Furthermore, the embroidery will recreate three squares across this width, while the almanac has five. Hopefully, working at roughly twice the scale of the original will give you a tacit understanding of some of the skill involved in making this exceptional historic binding.
