Sweet bags: 6-day masterclass

Jacqui Carey’s sweet bag kit (Link) will be explored over six days covering all the techniques required to make the sweet bag:
*Transferring designs.
*Embroidery – ‘circular’ tent, Elizabethan ground stitch, Elizabethan Plaited Braid stitch and chain stitch.
*Silkwoman skills - warp-twined edging, gimp making, tassel making, top decorations, knotting and loop-manipulated braid making.
*Sweet bag construction.

It is a challenging project but beginners are welcome as few will be familiar with all of the techniques. The kit aims for authentic fine-scale work, with the final bag measuring just 12 cm square. Students should expect to start, though not complete, their own sweet bag in order to gain practical experience and to find their ‘rhythm’. Nonetheless, each technique will initially be taught using large-scale materials, before working to scale. Materials and loan of equipment will be provided for these test pieces.

In addition to the practical learning, the workshop will be interspersed with powerpoint presentations. This in-depth study will allow you to follow some of Jacqui’s object-based research, enabling students to view some surviving examples, look at the evidence and gain a deeper understanding of historic sweet bags, their construction and their background context.
